Information Properly Delivered Equals Marketing InfluenceBy Chip PerryTo find success in Internet marketing, automobile manufacturers and dealers must transition away from leads and clicks as success measures and learn to understand the Internet as an influencing medium on shoppers. "I recommend better targeting of messaging for more granular contextual relevance, something that will drive deeper consumer engagement. By better engaging vehicle shoppers, auto dealers and manufacturers will have a greater influence on consumers’ preference for specific brands and dealers." “The impact of advertising upon online shoppers goes further than simply clicks and leads, but we tend to measure things – like clicks and leads – that are easy to measure” continued Perry. “Shoppers are heavily influenced by online research beyond what clicks and e-mail leads would indicate.”
The implications of this dynamic in on-line advertising are: • Focus on clicks and leads is stifling the ability for marketers to influence consumers and drive brand preference • Much of the influencing power of the internet is being under measured and underutilized • Marketing organizations need new resources, skills and tools to fully leverage the power of the internet Chip Perry, president and CEO of AutoTrader.com, spoke on this subject on March 30 at the 2010 NADA/IHS Global Insight Automotive Forum in New York. What Will the Next Generation of Mechanics be Thinking?
If you think the technology of next-generation cars is complicated, have you thought at all about what the mindset of the next generation of mechanics will be? Are we really going to call them "Wii Mechanics"? Right now they're sitting around playing Nintendo Wii and various other online games. They have "systems" running around in their brains that probably move at the same pace as the vehicles their parents are driving -- only with less maturity, for now. So it raises a couple of questions, and a few eyebrows -- where will we be looking, and how do we go about attracting young talent into the mechanics of the auto industry? Click here for some eye-opening insight. Then click on the image for more food for thought.

It's Not Your Father's Key FobKey fob morphs into high-tech connectivity
The time spent looking for that lost set of car keys may be quickly coming to an end. There are big aspirations for a tiny key fob made by Delphi Holdings LLC. By adding a tiny chip, that key fob turns into a massive communication device between one's cell phone and one's car. With a special application, a motorist still at the office can use a cell phone to remotely start his car or truck, adjust the temperature, confirm the vehicle is locked, detect an intruder, check the fuel level and make sure the tires are properly inflated. If the gas tank is running low, a couple of taps on the phone's screen locates a gas station and downloads directions, so the navigation system is programmed and ready when the driver reaches the car parked blocks away. In a world where consumers are passionate about -- and tethered to -- their cell phones, being able to provide safe and seamless connectivity in their vehicle is a key competitive advantage. Any app can be run when the vehicle is in park. A few continue to operate when the vehicle is in motion, such as Google Maps, which provides a sophisticated navigation system with satellite and street views. Read more...
