Recently, automakers have suggested that the government should increase gas taxes, says Edmunds.com and GreenCarAdvisor.com. Meanwhile, the decision makers in eight states are reportedly evaluating the concept of a per mile fee, which would replace existing gas taxes.

These proposals come in response to frustration with the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations in effect since 1975. The regulations were intended to improve national fuel economy, but experts agree that they don't achieve the goal. One problem with the legislation is that it mandates that automakers build fuel efficient vehicles, but provides no motivation for consumers to buy them.

Politicians in CA, MA, NH and IL understand this concept and are introducing bills that would raise their states' gas taxes.
