Dealers: Do You Have An Inspection Philosophy?

The most significant challenge when implementing a vehicle inspection process is getting buy-in to the "inspection philosophy" from the top down in the dealership. Here are some tipcs to help in the process.

Inspections serve more than one purpose.
Inspections are more than an opportunity to generate additional service sales. They are an obligation that a service department has to its customers to ensure that every vehicle is in good health or to advise the customer if the vehicle has needed service or repair issues. The decision to make this a part of the dealership brand promise is the responsibility of the dealer principle, general manager, and service manager and adhering to the process needs to become a condition of employment.

Add "quality" to your inspection program.
A quality vehicle inspection program is one that is performed consistently on every vehicle that has not been inspected within 30 days of the current visit. It has four key elements:

    1. Advising the customer at the time of the write-up that an inspection will be performed.
    2. Having the technician perform a thorough inspection and documenting the results.
    3. Having the service advisor communicate the results to the customer in a professional and compelling fashion.
    4. Following-up with the customers who declined to purchase needed services.

The key to success is in the training process.
Service advisors and technicians should be trained on their role in the process outlined above. Training needs to include word tracks that are developed by each service advisor that presents the inspection process and resulting recommendations in the most positive light. These should be practiced in role playing sessions to ensure that they flow. Technicians should also be trained on how to perform a thorough vehicle inspection in the quickest possible time.

image Would You Consider Eliminating Your F&I Department?

Dealers are facing changes of many kinds --in customer expectations, factory demands, sales resistance from customers, difficulty hiring qualified personnel, and the fastest evolution in the history of the business since World War II. The challenges of meeting this change has opened the way for dealers to seek out and implement new and radical methods and ideas to stay on the forefront of the industry and maintain growth and competitiveness. One new idea making the rounds these days is salespeople taking over the responsibilities of the F&I department. Is this something you would consider?
