Kuni Automotive Group

Vancouver, WA 98684

|
Carl Christoferson, is the CFO of the Kuni Automotive Group of Vancouver, Washington. The Group was named for its founder, the late Wayne D. Kuni. A prominent business leader in the Pacific Northwest, Kuni was an executive of GMAC’s Motors Holding division before acquiring his first dealership—Kuni Cadillac in the Portland suburb of Beaverton, Oregon—in 1970. The Kuni Automotive Group currently owns ten retail automotive dealerships in four western states, with luxury brands as the Group’s main focus.
1. How has Kuni’s network grown?
With the two Cadillac stores as the foundation, we have added nine more brands – BMW, Buick, GMC, Honda, Land Rover, Lexus, Pontiac, Saab, and Volkswagen – to our dealership group. In addition to those in Oregon and Washington, we’ve added dealerships in California and Colorado. Our concentration has been in metro markets, and our leading brand is Lexus, with four stores. In total, we have more than 850 employees.
2. After 35 years in business, what made you add compliance management from Compli to your businesses?
As a CPA, I’m well aware of the paperwork that is produced in just about every office of our dealerships. Compli’s web-based system was really attractive because it would enable us to replace the tons of paperwork with an easy-to-use electronic system. And, adopting Compli in our stores lets me, as CFO, sleep at night, because there are so many regulations we dealers have to follow and comply with.
3. Why did you feel the need to go beyond what the dealers’ attorneys and accountants do to help keep tabs on compliance these days?
What Compli does that’s different is that it monitors all functions. There are so many things to watch for outside of taxation and legal issues – things such as discrimination, safety, harassment, and advertising. And, Compli is not only web-based, but it’s there 24/7. It’s been well worth it for us. |
