Consumers Upset with Honda for Not Dealing with Odyssey Transmission Problems

Edmunds Auto Observer - March 10, 2010

Situation
While Toyota recalls take spotlight, Honda Odyssey owners are annoyed w/ transmission problems they're experiencing
Problems some owners believe Honda unwilling to acknowledge or address
Since Oct. 2006, members of Edmunds.com's CarSpace Forums posted over 1.4K invidual posts to thread called Honda Odyssey Transmission Problems
Details not only their Odyssey transmission issues but also action and inaction they've seen from Honda dealers and parent company in response
By far the largest group of transmission complaints involves Odysseys from model years 1999 through 2004
Edmund.com did analysis of complaints to NHTSA - found many consumers cited transmission-related problems with 2001 through 2004 Odysseys
Significant Points
Drivers notice erratic shifting, flashing "D" light in gauge cluster and sometimes illumination of traction control light and/or check engine light
After getting their cars inspected, owners are told that the transmission has failed and must be replaced
Replaced usually with a re-manufactured unit, a repair that can cost $4,500 or more
Honda recognized issue early and voluntarily extended Odyssey's original transmission warranty to 7 years or 100K miles for 1999 through 2001 MYs
Later, in coordination with NHTSA, car maker also issued a recall meant to permanently address problem for 2002 through 2004 model year vehicles
The issue now for consumers is that neither of these actions appears to have fully addressed root cause of transmission failures
