Court Backs GM on Religious Issue

Source: : Chicago Tribune, December 30, 2005
Situation
Federal appeals court rules in favor of GM over religious discrimination case
John Moranski had wanted company-sponsored affinity group
GM does sponsor affinity groups for women, gays and ethnic minorities
But doesn't promote groups advocating religious or political positions
Many Fortune 500 companies sponsor affinity groups
Some allow religious groups, including Ford
Significant Points
Moranski, born-again Christian, argued that faith is identifying characteristic
Much like race, gender or sexual orientation
Claimed denying him while giving others access to company resources discriminatory
Court says Moranski's claim has no basis in Title VII of Civil Rights Act
US Chamber of Commerce, Equal Employment Advisory Council supported GM
Worried if companies forced to recognize religious groups, would drop affinity groups completely
Says
"[Moranski's] logic would mean that a company would violate Title VII if it recognized an affinity group on the basis of religion but not sex, or granted status to a group on the basis of sex but not to one based on ethnicity." -- Federal appeals court ruling
